Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards:
Boston Globe Newspaper, Horn Book Awards, Horn Book
Magazine, 14 Beacon Street, Boston MA 02108. Annual award.
"To honor most outstanding children's fiction or poetry,
picture and nonfiction books published within the U.S."
Award: $500 first prize in each category; silver plate for
the 2 honor books in each category. No entry fee. Entry
forms or rules for SASE. Deadline: May 15. Previously
published material from June 30 - May 31 of previous year.
AWP Award Series in the Novel and Short Fiction:
The Associated Writing Programs, c/o Old Dominion
University, Norfolk, VA 23529-0079. Annual award. The AWP
Award Series was established in cooperation with several
university presses in order to publish and make fine fiction
available to a wide audience.
Awards: $1,500 honorarioum and publication with a university
press. In addition, AWP tries to place mss of finalists
with participating presses. Judges: Distinguished writers
in each genre. Entry fee $10. Contest/award rules
available for SASE. Deadlines: Manuscript postmarked
between January 1 - February 29. Only book-length mss in
the novel and short story collections are eligible.
Manuscripts previously published in their entirety,
including self-publishing, are not eligible. No mss
returned.
The Crucible Poetry and Fiction Competition:
CRUCIBLE, Barton College, College Station, Wilson NC 27893.
Annual competition for short stories.
Awards: $150 for first prize; $100 for second prize and
publication in Crucible. Judges: The editors. Guidelines
for SASE. Deadline: April. Unpublished submissions.
Fiction should be 8,000 words or less.
National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship:
Literature Program, Room 723, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW,
Washington DC 20506. (202) 682-5451. Program Specialist,
Literature Program: Kristin Kelly. "The mission of the NEA
is to foster the excellence, diversity and vitality of the
arts in the United States, and to help broaden the
availability and appreciation of such excellence, diversity
and vitality." The purpose of the fellowship is to enable
creative writers "to set aside time for writing, reserach or
travel and generally to advance their careers."
Competition open to fiction writers who have published a
novel or novella, a collection of stories or at least 5
stories in 2 or more magazines since Jan. 1, 1982. Annual
award: $20,000. All mss are judged anonymously.
Application and guidelines available upon request.
Deadline: March 5.
The National Written & Illustrated By . . . Awards Contest for Students:
Landmark Editions, INc., Box 4469, Kansas City, MO 64127.
(816) 241-4919. Contact: Nan Thatch. "Contest initiated to
encourage students to write and illustrate original books
and to inspire them to become published authors and
illustrators." Annual competition. "Each student whose book
is selected for publication will be offered a complete
publishing contract. To insure that students benefit from
the proceeds, royalties from the sale of their books will be
placed in an individual trust fund, set up for each student
by ihs or her parents or legal guardians, at a bank of their
choice. Funds may be withdrawn when a student becomes of
age, or withdrawn earlier (either in whole or in part) for
educational purposes or in case of proof of specific needs
due to unusual hardship. Reports of book sales and
royalties will be sent to the student and the parents or
guardians annually." Winners also receive an
all-expense-paid trip to Kansas City to oversee final
reproduction phases of their books. Books by students may
be entered in one of three age categories:
A - 6 to 9 years old;
B - 10 to 13 years old;
C - 14 to 19 years old.
Each book submitted must be both written and illustrated by
the same student. "Any books that are written by one
student and illustrated by another will be automatically
disqualified." Book entries must be submitted by a teacher
or librarian. Entry fee: $1. For rules and guidelines,
send a #10 SASE stamped with 58 cents postage. Deadline:
May 1 of each year.
Eaton Liberary Associates' Literary Awards Program:
Eaton Literary Association, Box 49795, Sarasota, FL 34230.
(813) 366-6589. Biannual award for short stories and
novels. Award: $2,500 for best book-length ms, $500 for
best short story. Competition receives approximately 2,000
submissions annually. Judges are 2 staff members in
conjunction with an independant agency. Entry forms or
rules for SASE. Deadline is March 31 for short stories;
August 31 for book-length mss.
