  7. HAM LINK FOR SPACECRAFT

  9. On April 13, amateur radio linked the Russian space station MIR with
  10. the orbiting US space shuttle.
  11.  
  12. By two meters, Astronaut Jay Apt, N5QWL, contacted Rita Iaquinto,
  13. VK3CFI, in Melbourne, Australia, while Russian Cosmonaut Valery
  14. Polyakov, U3MIR, hooked up with Graham Ratcliff, VK5AGR, in
  15. Adelaide.

  17. The Australians then used a telephone link to connect the two
  18. spacecraft as both passed over Australia, at 5:36 pm Australia time.

  20. The SHUTTLE-MIR contact was arranged by the Shuttle Amateur Radio
  21. Experiment (SAREX).  The SAREX payload has flown on 12 previous
  22. shuttle flights, providing school children, ham operators and
  23. astronaut families with the unique opportunity to speak with the
  24. shuttle astronauts via ham radio.

  26. Polyakov ended his communication by wishing Apt, and the entire crew
  27. aboard Endeavour, a safe return home.  The shuttle is scheduled to
  28. land in Florida on Monday, April 18 at 12:12 pm.
