  8. Launched in 1989 as a new service of the National Library of Scotland,
  9. the Scottish Science Library exists to meet the needs of the scientific,
  10. industrial, and business community throughout Scotland.
  11.  
  12. Housed in the National Library's new 'high tech' Causewayside Building
  13. in Edinburgh, the Scottish Science Library is a reference library
  14. offering a comprehensive service in its subject areas.
  15.  
  16. There is no charge for admission, or to consult material in the Library,
  17. but prospective users should bring identification with them.

  20.                          WHO CAN USE THE LIBRARY
  21.                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  22. The Library is open to any person or institution with a need to use its
  23. collections. Certain restrictions apply to undergraduate students and
  24. schoolchildren. Details available on request. The business community can
  25. call upon the expertise of the specialist staff of the Scottish Business
  26. Information Service, which is based in the Scottish Science Library.

  28. o  Extensive collections
  29.  
  30.    All new scientific books and journals published in the UK are
  31.    received under legal deposit legislation, and these are backed up by
  32.    an extensive collection of foreign periodicals.

  34. o  Browsing facility
  35.  
  36.    Current books, journals, and reference works are on open access,
  37.    leaving readers free to browse among the shelves.

  39. o  Indexing and abstracting sources
  40.  
  41.    All major sources are held, including

  44.         Chemical Abstracts 1907-
  45.         Science Abstracts 1898-
  46.         Science Citation Index 1945-

  48. o  The latest technology

  50.    Online access to a wide range of databases, together with the latest
  51.    CD-ROM facilities, supplement conventional sources of information.

  53. o  Personal attention

  55.    Specialist staff are on hand to deal with all types of enquiry, from
  56.    the simple to the complex. Desk research is undertaken on request.

  58. o  Remote access
  59.  
  60.    For the convenience of those who cannot visit the Library, enquiries
  61.    are accepted by telephone, fax, and telex. There is a special direct
  62.    line to the Business Information help desk.

  64. o  Interlibrary loan and document supply
  65.  
  66.    If the Library is unable to supply a book or journal from its own
  67.    stock, the reader may use the inter-library loan facility. This
  68.    service provides either a photocopy of the document, or the
  69.    book/journal itself, for study within the Library.

  71. o  Self-service photocopying
  72.  
  73.    Self-service photocopying is available, in addition to standard
  74.    photocopy and photographic services. Normal copyright restrictions
  75.    apply.
