BOOKS
~~~~~
A substantial collection of books, papers and documents has been
built up which covers all aspects of the District, past and present.
Also included are books by, and about, local people.
To complement this local collection there is also a wide range of
general works on Scotland, including the 1st 2nd and 3rd Statistical
Accounts, the Reports of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic
Monuments; and publications of bodies such as the Society of antiquaries
of Scotland.
A growing collection of 19th Century local directories is available
and these can often be of considerable value to local and family
historians.
MAPS
~~~~
Ordnance Survey maps of the area are stocked at a variety of scales
and from various periods. Some older maps and estate and other plans are
also held.
NEWSPAPERS
~~~~~~~~~~
DALKEITH ADVERTISER
o This is available in microfilm or hard copy from 1869 to the present
day.
SOUTH MIDLOTHIAN ADVERTISER
o A run of this paper is held for the period 1932-52 and 1960-73 (and
for its predecessor the 'Midlothian Journal' from 1884-1932). This
deals in more detail with the western area of the District.
COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
buildings, places, and events in the District is available. Donations,
welcomed.
VALUATION ROLLS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We hold an almost complete set of Rolls for the County of Midlothian
from 1867-1975 and for the District from 1975 to date. These show the
owner and usually, tenant of each property at the time of compilation.
Until 1958 they also stated the tenant's occupation.
CENSUS RETURNS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 1841-91 Census returns are available on microfilm for the area
covered by Midlothian at that time. These show entire families with ages
and occupations. From 1851 the return also shows parish of birth.
GENEALOGICAL SOURCES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 1991 and International Genealogical Indexes are available on
microfiche. These lists entries for baptisms and marriages appearing in
the Old Parish Registers and in some Civil Registers up to 1855 and in
some cases into the 1870's. Microfilm of the Old Parish Registers for
parishes still in Midlothian is also held and includes birth, marriage
and burial registers. Some lists of monumental inscriptions are
available.
