GIN RUMMY CHALLENGE
Version 8.2a, December 1993
For IBM PC/XT/AT/PS Systems, Compatibles, And Clones
Copyright 1993 by Jim Cody, Omaha, Nebraska
(CIS ID: 72276,1366)
John Scarne's "Encyclopedia Of Card Games" (Harper & Row) recognizes Gin
Rummy as America's most popular two-handed card game. Gin Rummy Challenge
(RUMMY) is a dynamic and elegant way to play Gin Rummy against your
computer, or against another human player via modem-to-modem communications
between two computers. A modem compatible with the standard "AT" command
set is necessary only for modem-to-modem play.
RUMMY runs on color (CGA/EGA/VGA), black-&-white, or monochrome video
displays in DOS modes CO40/80, BW40/80, and MONO. Of course, color is the
preferred mode of operation (except B-&-W may be best for some laptops with
LCD/Plasma VDUs). From the DOS command prompt or from a batch file, you
should start RUMMY with command syntax appropriate for your video system.

A mouse device is optional. All of the game instructions and help you will
need are contained within the program. The simplest way to play the game
is to use a MOUSE or the <Enter> and <Right-Arrow> keys to signal your Gin
Rummy draw/discard decisions. Be sure to read the help screens, which are
available when the message "Press <F1> For MENU" appears on a game screen.
If you have a color video display (CGA/EGA/VGA), you will find that playing
in ZOOM mode is preferable after you have familiarized yourself with the
features of the game. ZOOM mode may be enabled whenever the message "Press
<F2> To ZOOM" appears on the game screen.
A sample game save/resume file (RUMMY.GS4) has been included. Simply delete
this file in order to start your own game save/resume file. If you have a
save/resume file (RUMMY.GS3) from a previous version of RUMMY, you must
rename it as RUMMY.GS4 in order to use it with V8.2a.
RUMMY V8.2a is compatible with V8.2. Versions 8.2 and 8.2a add support for
COM3 and COM4, in addition to COM1 and COM2. These versions also feature
modem handling changes that permit faxmodems to be used. Specifically,
version 8.2a increases the number of COM port configurations supported.
Here are the supported port setups as of version 8.2a:
PORT BASE-ADDRESS IRQ-LINE
==== ============ ========
COM1 03F8 IRQ4 (Std)
COM2 02F8 IRQ3 (Std)
COM3 03E8 IRQ4 (Std)
COM4 02E8 IRQ3 (Std)
COM3 3220 IRQ3 (for PS/2)
COM4 3228 IRQ3 (for PS/2)
COM3 0338 IRQ4 (for Non-Std)
COM3 03E0 IRQ4 (for Non-Std)
COM4 0238 IRQ3 (for Non-Std)
COM4 02E0 IRQ3 (for Non-Std)
On systems which adhere to this serial port configuration scheme, Rummy will
auto-activate these ports when there is a gap in the installation sequence.
For example, if you have functional ports for COM1, COM2, and COM4 (but not
COM3), Rummy will auto-activate COM4 (in addition to COM1 and COM2).
RUMMY is FREE! Distribute it to your friends and have fun playing RUMMY
against them via telephone. ### End ###
