  43. Welcome to soc.couples.intercultural -- an unmoderated forum where
  44. people involved in, or who are interested in, inter-cultural or
  45. inter-racial relationships, can come together and discuss issues that
  46. are common to such relationships.

  48. All topics related to these relationships are welcome here.  These
  49. include, but are not limited to:
  50.  
  51. - Differences in culture: family, religious, racial, etc.
  52. - Child rearing (cultural considerations, discrimination, etc.)
  53. - Racial prejudice and methods of dealing with this
  54. - Anything that could be applied to the "recipe of success" to keep

  83. Relax...it is a sad fact of life, but there are people out there who
  84. will say the most ridiculous things simply to start a flame-war.  Or perhaps
  85. they really hold these ridiculous views.

  87. However, I have my doubts that anything we say here on net.news to try
  88. to convince these people of the error of their ways will make much
  89. difference to them.  In short, it is probably best to avoid flame-wars
  90. wherever possible, or to not bother following up to one already in
  91. progress.

  95. Q-04. Are the postings for soc.couples.intercultural archived anywhere?

  97. Tom Haapanen has volunteered his services as official archiver of
  98. soc.couples.intercultural articles (thanks, Tom).  They are located on
  99. his ftp.metrics.com site (198.133.164.1) in the ~/archive subdirectory.
  100.  
  101. Access these articles via anonymous FTP.  You can retrieve articles for
  102. a given month by downloading file sci.YYMM (where YY is the year, and MM
  103. is the month).

  105. Tom asks that people follow a few reasonable rules to keep things running
  106. smoothly:

  117. Q-05. This group is new...what topics would be good to talk about first?

  119. Well, of course that is entirely up to you, but here are some sample
  120. questions that several people have submitted for possible resolution and
  121. inclusion here in the FAQ:

  123. - In my fiancee's culture a girl's parents have the final word as to who 
  124. she should marry. In mine that is not true. We intend to get married. How 
  125. do we and they deal with this?
  126.  
  127. - My husband is from Pakistan, and I'm from India. Our daughter has had
  128. some questions about the tension between Pakistan and India over Kashmir.
  129. How should we deal with this? 
  130.  
  131. - My Asian wife's family hates me.  We live comfortably, I have broadened 
  132. my horizons by learning her language, appreciate her culture, but they
  133. can't seem to get past the fact that I'm not Asian.  These people are,
  134. of course, very important to my wife.  How can I get them to accept me?

  136. - My son, 6 years old of European-Maghreb origin, doesn't accept people of
  137. Maghreb or other origins than European.  Is this for a cultural, racial or
  138. social reason?

  140. - How do I make my fundamentalist Christian girlfriend and in-laws cope with, 
  141. or accept, if not understand, my athiest/agnostic/differing views?

  145. Q-06. How many people read this newsgroup anyway?

  147. According to the "USENET Readership report" (arbitron) published monthly
  148. by Brian Reid <reid@decwrl.dec.com>, about 29,000 people are estimated to
  149. read soc.couples.intercultural world-wide.  This does not include those
  150. people who participate via the gated mailing list.
  151.  
  152. Here is the complete data since the group's inception in October, as
  153. follows:
  154.  
  155.    (a) - Ranking (out of approximately 2500 groups)
  156.    (b) - Estimated number of readers world-wide.
  157.    (c) - Actual number of readers in sampled population.
  158.    (d) - Percentage of sites receiving soc.couples.intercultural.
  159.    (e) - Number of messages in given month.
  160.    (f) - Size (in K) of all messages in given month.
  161.    (g) - Percentage that articles are cross-posted to other groups.
  162.    (h) - Cost per month (in US $) per reader.
  163.    (i) - Percentage of all newsreaders who read soc.couples.intercultural.

  169. As you can see, we made quite a leap from October's standing, but I am
  170. still not satisfied with the 34% propogation level.  We need to get this
  171. closer to 100%!

  175. Q-07. How can I increase the awareness and popularity of this group?
  176.  
  177. First of all, bear in mind that this forum is brand new.  It may take
  178. some time before many sites carry this group.  However, if you wish to
  179. help increase people's awareness of this group, perhaps one of the
  180. suggestions listed below may appeal to you:
  181.  
  182. - Word of mouth.  Don't underestimate the power of word of mouth.  Tell
  183. your friends if they are interested in inter-cultural or inter-racial
  184. relationships, perhaps consider posting something around your university
  185. or work site, etc.
  186.  
  187. - If you carry the soc.couples.intercultural newsgroup on your system, 
  188. perhaps you'd consider taking part in the 'arbitron' survey compiled by
  189. Brian Reid?  Each month, the top 2000(?) groups are listed, including the
  190. number of readers world-wide, the percentage of sites that carry the
  191. group, the number of articles, etc.  This information is compiled by
  192. data sent from participating sites, purely on a volunteer basis.  This
  193. is one way the soc.couples.intercultural group can climb higher on the
  194. ratings list, thereby possibly gaining the notice of sites or
  195. subscribers not currently aware of this group.  I'll post this
  196. information from time to time to soc.couples.intercultural for your
  197. interest.

  201. Q-08. I don't have access to soc.couples.intercultural.  Help!

  203. The best solution would be for you to put in a request to your system 
  204. administrator asking him/her to carry the newsgroup.  News is by far the
  205. most efficient mechanism for wide distribution of articles (assuming a
  206. large audience is reading them).
  207.  
  208. Alternately, the soc.couples.intercultural is being bidirectionally
  209. gated and offered as an e-mail mailing list.  So if you can't get access
  210. to net.news, and wish to participate in the discussions, this solution is 
  211. for you.  To use this option follow the directions below:
  212.  
  213. SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE:  
  214. To subscribe, send an e-mail message to 'lserv@psg.com' with
  215. "subscribe int-couple" in the BODY of your message.  This only works if
  216. your 'From:' header contains a valid address.  If not, then instead you
  217. should state in the body, "subscribe int-couple <subscription address>"
  218. where 'subscription address' is the e-mail address you wish to receive
  219. all articles.
  220.  
  221. To unsubscribe, send an e-mail message to 'lserv@psg.com' with
  222. "unsubscribe int-couple" in the BODY of your message.

  224. ARTICLE SUBMISSION:
  225. To submit an article to the mailing list (where it will be also distributed 
  226. on the news-side of soc.couples.intercultural as well), send your articles
