  3.     This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
  4.     Professionals (ASP).  ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
  5.     principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
  6.     shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the
  7.     member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help
  8.     you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not

  13.     DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  15.     Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
  16.     buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue using it,
  17.     you are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details
  18.     -- some request registration while others require it, some specify a
  19.     maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
  20.     simple right to continue using the software to an updated program
  21.     with printed manual.

  23.     Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
  24.     the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  25.     exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  26.     programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
  27.     comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
  28.     ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
  29.     author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
  30.     software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
  31.     example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
  32.     disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  34.     Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  35.     should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
  36.     it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
  37.     your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
  38.     the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
  39.     money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay
  40.     for it.

  44.     Users of QuickTax must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "QuickTax
  45.     is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all warranties, expressed
  46.     or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
  47.     merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes
  48.     no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result
  49.     from the use of QuickTax." 
  50.     QuickTax is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
  51.     the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your friends,
  52.     but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
  53.     The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal
  54.     computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to
  55.     provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new
  56.     products.  If you find this program useful and find that you are
  57.     using QuickTax and continue to use QuickTax after a reasonable trial
  58.     period (30 days), you must make a registration payment of $19 +
  59.     $4.00 S&H (+7.25% or $1.38 tax on CA orders - please use order form)
  60.     to Donald R Bates. The $19 registration fee will license one copy
  61.     for use on any one computer at any one time.  You must treat this
  62.     software just like a book.  An example is that this software may be
  63.     used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
  64.     computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of
  65.     it being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just
  66.     as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.

  68.     Commercial users of QuickTax must register and pay for their copies
  69.     of QuickTax within 30 days of first use or their license is
  70.     withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting

  73.     Anyone distributing QuickTax for any kind of remuneration must first
  74.     contact Donald R Bates at the address below for authorization. This
  75.     authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  76.     recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
  77.     distributors, and such distributors may begin offering QuickTax
  78.     immediately (However Donald R Bates must still be advised so that
  79.     the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version of
  80.     QuickTax.).

  83.     for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their copy if
  84.     they find that they can use it.  All registered users will receive a

  110.     INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  112.     To install the program on your hard drive go to the floppy drive
  113.     (A or B) or directory that you are installing from. Then from the
  114.     DOS prompt (A:\>  or  B:\>) enter:

  118.     If you have downloaded a zip file to a directory on your hard disk,
  119.     go to that directory, unzip the file and type INSTALL to run the
  120.     install procedure directly from that directory.

  122.     To run the program on your hard disk go to the subdirectory
  123.     C:\QUICKTAX created by the install procedure and type:

  125.                        QUICKTAX {and press Enter}
  126.  
  127.     You may want to add C:\QUICKTAX to your PATH command to enable
  128.     access to QuickTax from any directory.

  131.     WINDOWS INSTALLATION

  133.     QuickTax also runs well under WINDOWS but you will have to install
  134.     manually after doing the DOS installation.

  136.     Start Windows and using Program Manager:
  137.     > Open the group in which you want to install QuickTax
  138.     > From the File menu choose New
  139.     > Select the Program option button
  140.     > In the Description box type: QuickTax
  141.     > In the Command Line box type: C:\QUICKTAX\QUICKTAX
  142.     > Specify the working directory: C:\QUICKTAX\QUICKTAX\DATA
