  2.                   The Mayflower Compact (1620)

  4.   On reaching the American shores, the adult males among the
  5.   plymouth colonist gathered in a cabin in Mayflower.  The agreed
  6.   that they would govern themselfs.  This government by compact, 
  7.   which these Separtatist had previously used only to govern the
  8.   churches, provided the basis for the government of the colony
  9.   for the next seventy years.

  11.   In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten,
  12.   the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James,
  13.   by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King,
  14.   Defender of the Faith, Having undertaken for the Glory of God,
  15.   and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our 
  16.   King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the
  17.   northern Parts of Virginia; do by these Presents, solemnly and
  18.   mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and
  19.   combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our
  20.   better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends
  21.   aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame
  22.   such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and
  23.   Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and
  24.   convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we
  25.   promise all due Submission and Obedience.

  28.   Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign
  29.   Lord, King James of England, France and Ireland, the eighteenth,
