1. Installation.
----------------
IMPORTANT!
If you want to create backup copy of your disk, make sure
that you put the backup on the same type of disk as the
source. If you're backing up the 5 1/4 inch 1.2 Mb disk set,
use only blank 5 1/4 inch 1.2 Mb disks for backup, etc. The
installation will not work correctly if you do not use the
same media type for the backup disks.
To start the installation, change your current drive to the one
that has the install program on it and type INSTALL. You will
be given instructions in a box at the bottom of the screen for
each prompt. For example, if you will be installing from drive
A:, type:
A:
INSTALL
After installation, make sure you insert \FT - or
whatever you selected as your FT directory - into
your DOS path so the executable files can be found.
Then type FT and press 'Enter' to start the program.
2. Keys, Fingers and Colors.
----------------------------
The keyboard displayed on the monitor is the heart of
Friendly Typing and Spelling and is always shown during a
typing drill or exercise session. The idea for its use is
to let you look at an image of actual keyboard. This approach
will help you to keep your eyes off the real keyboard. This
is extremely beneficial and will form special relationships
between your finger placements on the real keyboard and the
image of a simulated keyboard on the screen.
Colors play very important role to teach you the correct
finger placement. Each finger and the corresponding key have
the same color. It will help you to learn typing very quickly.
This method is extremely effective!
The screen display consisits of four elements. The first
is an exact image of the main typing area of the keyboard you
have selected when you started Typing or Spelling from Main
Menu.
The second is a text panel which occupies the upper part
of the screen. It used to display the word groups, sentences
and drills you have to type during exercises.
The third are hands which occupy the bottom part of the
screen. Each finger has a different color when you type a
letter. The key and the corresponding finger have the same
color.
The forth is a clock.
3. Customizing Your Program.
----------------------------
You can customize the way Friendly Typing and Spelling
uses colors, keystrokes, sounds, and much more. Select Set Up
option from Main Menu or Settings/Painbrush options from
Typing/Spelling submenus to change differnt parameters/colors.
4. Menu System and Function Keys.
---------------------------------
Friendly Typing and Spelling uses a menu system with
a highlighted selector bar that can be controlled with the
ARROW keys. These are the keys to the right of the main
keyboard and are also known as cursor keys.
As you tap the arrow keys, the menu selector bar will
move up and down the menu and display (reverse video) current
selection. When you hit the required character or 'Enter',
the selection is made.
The function keys on your keyboard are located either
