The sequence of assembling and disassembling the clarinet is second nature to
the intermediate and advanced player and will not be presented here. However
it should be emphasized that a~H careful and exact alignment of the bridge keys
is important.~N An out of line at this joint will cause alternate fingerings
for the Bb above the staff to not respond.

The way in which the reed is placed on the mouthpiece determines to a large
degree how the instrument responds. The reed must be properly centered both
at the tip and at the butt. A crooked reed is hard to blow, unresponsive and
likely to squeak. A hairline of black of the mouthpiece should be seen at
the tip. Occasionally minor deviations from this placement can make an
unresponsive reed play better.~H Almost imperceptable changes in reed placement
and ligature pressure can make dramatic changes in reed response.~N

Rapid changes between the Bb and the A clarinet required in much of the
classical literature adds to the problems of the clarinetist. The majority
of clarinetist remove the mouthpiece and in the process may disturb the reed
placement.~H A sugested alternative is to remove and transfer both the
mouthpiece and the barrel.~N While this method could cause some tuning problems
it is considerably faster and less likely to disturb the reed placement.

A fine instrument should receive a yearly checkup. ~HThe services of an able
repair technician are essential.~N After a number of years depending on the
amount of usage a complete overhaul is required.
Dirt and lint accumulates in tone holes particularly in the upper barrel
and should be cleaned as necessary. The tone hole tube of the register key
is prone to collect lint from the swabe. If allowed to accumulate the Bb
using the register key becomes markedly stuffy. The register key is easily
removed and replaced. The tube should be cleaned (using a pipe cleaner or
equivalent) on a regular basis.
