  6. How to run PATCH.EXE

  9. This program will upgrade your EZ-SCSI ASPI managers (from EZ-SCSI 1.x
  10. or EZ-SCSI 2.x) to EZ-SCSI 3.0.  The version of EZ-SCSI you have is
  11. printed on your floppy label.  In addition, users of EZ-SCSI 2.x will
  12. also have their CD-ROM driver updated to the EZ-SCSI 3.0 level
  13. (ASPICD.SYS).  To upgrade, type:

  15. PATCH C:\SCSI
  16.  
  17. where C:\SCSI is the location of your previous EZ-SCSI installation.
  18. If you would like to view which files were updated, you may want to
  19. redirect the patch program output to a file.  For example, to redirect
  20. to EZPATCH.TXT, type:

  22. PATCH C:\SCSI > EZPATCH.TXT
  23.  
  24. Backups of the older versions will be stored in an OLDSYS subdirectory
  25. (e.g. C:\SCSI\OLDSYS).  Also included in this subdirectory, you will
  26. find UNPATCH.BAK.  You can rename this file to UNPATCH.BAT and run it
  27. if you wish to restore your drivers to the previous version.

  29. If you run Microsoft Windows, you should copy the files WINASPI.DLL and
  30. VASPID.386 to your Windows' SYSTEM subdirectory.  For example:

  158. SMARTDRV 5.0 and XA formatted CDs

  161. SMARTDRV 5.0 (in MS-DOS 6.2, Windows for Workgroups 3.11) now includes
  162. caching for CD-ROM drives.  There is a problem with SMARTDRV in its support
  163. for XA formatted Compact Discs.  If you experience "Not Ready" errors,
  164. using SMARTDRV 5.0, add /E:2048 to your SMARTDRV command line.  For example:

  173. The ISA bus is limited to 24 bits of address.  2^24 = 16 MBytes.  What does
  174. this mean?  It means that an ISA card that uses DMA cannot physically
  175. access memory beyond 16 MBytes of RAM.  This is a limitation of the ISA
  176. bus.
  177.  
  178. The 16 MByte issue is not a limitation with PCI cards, EISA cards, VL cards,
  179. or PIO cards.  It is only an issue with an ISA card that uses DMA such as
  180. the AHA-1540/1542.  ASPIBUF.SYS is an ASPI double-buffering driver that
  181. you load immediately after ASPI4DOS.SYS (e.g. before ASPICD.SYS, ASPIDISK.SYS,
  182. etc.).  It, along with ASPI4DOS.SYS, must both be loaded low before EMM386
  183. (or QEMM, 386MAX, etc.).  It intercepts ASPI and INT 13h commands and double-
  184. buffers both so that these data transfers occur within the first 16 MBytes
  185. of RAM.  ASPIBUF.SYS is intelligent enough to not double-buffer if the
  186. ASPI or INT 13h buffer is already within the first 16 MBytes of RAM.  It is
  187. only designed to work with ASPIDISK.SYS, ASPICD.SYS, and INT 13h commands.
  188. Other ASPI drivers and/or applications may or may not work.  ASPI FOR
  189. WINDOWS APPLICATIONS (E.G. SHOWSCSI.EXE) WILL BE DISABLED ONCE THIS DRIVER
  190. IS LOADED.

  192. By default, ASPIBUF.SYS will allocate a 16K buffer for double-buffering.  You
  193. can specify the size (2K-64K) by using the size= command line switch.  For
  194. example:

  198. NOTE:  This driver was not available with previous versions of Adaptec
  199. EZ-SCSI but will still be decompressed to your hard drive when you run
  200. the PATCH program.
