  3.   LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
  4.   The  State  of  Minnesota  issues  a  thirteen (13) character alpha
  5.   numeric   driver  license   number  from   the  driver's   personal
  6.   identifiers.  The  number  consists  of  one  (1)  alpha  character
  7.   followed  by twelve  (12) numeric  characters with  dash delimiters
  8.   that break  the number into  a 1-3-3-3-3 grouping:  (A-nnn-nnn-nnn-
  9.   nnn)

  11.   Minnesota  uses  the  Nu-Soundex  algorithm  to  generate a license
  12.   number  from the  driver's name,  date of  birth, and sex, breaking
  13.   this information into coded portions as follows:

  15.   Last name                              -  first four (4) characters
  16.   First name                             -  next three (3) characters
  17.   Middle name or initial                 -  next three (3) characters
  18.   Date of birth                          -  last three (3) characters

  21.   DOCUMENT:
  22.   The  plastic  photographic  license  manufactured  by  NBS, Imaging
  23.   Systems  Division, displays  the driver's  photograph in  the lower
  24.   right corner. Textual information is embossed, credit card style on
  25.   the license.

  28.   TERM:
  29.   Licenses  are valid  for four  (4) years,  expiring on the driver's
  30.   birthday. Provincial licenses expire on the 19th birthday. Licenses
  31.   for minors under 12, expire on the 21st birthday.

  34.   MINORS:
  35.   Licenses issued to drivers under 21 subsequent to January 1990 show
  36.   a black box  at the top  of the document  bearing text "UNDER  21".
  37.   Previously, licenses  issued to drivers  under 19 bore  a black bar
  38.   with the text "'PROVISIONAL".

  41.   CDL:
  42.   Commercial licenses  are indicated by  "COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE"
  43.   in the heading box.
