  3.   LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
  4.   The  State  of  Michigan  issues  a  thirteen  (13) character alpha
  5.   numeric   driver  license   number  from   the  driver's   personal
  6.   identifiers.  The  number  consists  of  one  (1)  alpha  character
  7.   followed  by twelve  (12) numeric  characters with  dash delimiters
  8.   that break  the number into  a 1-3-3-3-3 grouping:  (A-nnn-nnn-nnn-
  9.   nnn)

  11.   Michigan uses the Nu-Soundex algorithm to generate a license number
  12.   from  the driver's  name, date   of birth,  and sex,  breaking this
  13.   information into coded portions as follows:

  15.   Last name                              -  first four (4) characters
  16.   First name                             -  next three (3) characters
  17.   Middle name or initial                 -  next three (3) characters
  18.   Date of birth                          -  last three (3) characters

  21.   DOCUMENT:
  22.   The  plastic laminated,  photographic license  manufactured by NBS,
  23.   Imaging Systems  Division, displays the driver's  photograph in the
  24.   lower  left  corner.  The  current  issue  license  has an embossed
  25.   pattern of  the state seal on  the laminate and a  faint blue state
  26.   seal over  the textual area  of the document.  Earlier licenses may
  27.   also show radiating security patterns or retroreflective coatings.

  30.   TERM:
  31.   Licenses are valid for four (4) years, or two (2) years for problem
  32.   drivers, expiring on the driver's birthday. License may be extended
  33.   for a single four (4) year term with a sticker on the obverse side.

  36.   MINORS:
  37.   Licenses currently  issued to minors have  "UNDER 21" printed above
  38.   the photograph.

  42.   Commercial licenses are indicated in the "CDL TYPE" box.
