MICHIGAN
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Michigan issues a thirteen (13) character alpha
numeric driver license number from the driver's personal
identifiers. The number consists of one (1) alpha character
followed by twelve (12) numeric characters with dash delimiters
that break the number into a 1-3-3-3-3 grouping: (A-nnn-nnn-nnn-
nnn)
Michigan uses the Nu-Soundex algorithm to generate a license number
from the driver's name, date of birth, and sex, breaking this
information into coded portions as follows:
Last name - first four (4) characters
First name - next three (3) characters
Middle name or initial - next three (3) characters
Date of birth - last three (3) characters
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated, photographic license manufactured by NBS,
Imaging Systems Division, displays the driver's photograph in the
lower left corner. The current issue license has an embossed
pattern of the state seal on the laminate and a faint blue state
seal over the textual area of the document. Earlier licenses may
also show radiating security patterns or retroreflective coatings.
TERM:
Licenses are valid for four (4) years, or two (2) years for problem
drivers, expiring on the driver's birthday. License may be extended
for a single four (4) year term with a sticker on the obverse side.
MINORS:
Licenses currently issued to minors have "UNDER 21" printed above
the photograph.
CDL:
Commercial licenses are indicated in the "CDL TYPE" box.
