MARYLAND
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of Maryland issues a thirteen (13) character alpha
numeric driver license number from the driver's personal
identifiers. The number consists of one (1) alpha character
followed by twelve (12) numeric characters with dash delimiters
that break the number into a 1-3-3-3-3 grouping: (A-nnn-nnn-nnn-
nnn)
Maryland uses the Nu-Soundex algorithm to generate a license number
from the driver's name, date of birth, and sex, breaking this
information into coded portions as follows:
Last name - first four (4) characters
First name - next three (3) characters
Middle name or initial - next three (3) characters
Date of birth - last three (3) characters
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated, photographic license manufactured by
Polaroid, displays the driver's photograph in the upper left
corner. The camera number should overlap the right edge of the
photograph and a repetitive pattern "MARYLAND" is printed within
the laminate over the textual portion of the document. The Maryland
State seal is printed within the laminate over the date of birth
area.
TERM:
Licenses issued subsequent to January 1, 1992 are valid for five
(5) years, expiring on the driver's birthday. Previously issued
licenses are valid for four years, also expiring on the driver's
birthday. Minor's licenses issued subsequent to July 1988 may be
valid for up to five (5) years and two (2) months, and expire sixty
(60) days after the driver's 21st birthday.
MINORS:
Licenses currently issued to minors have a red photograph backdrop,
and show a profile photograph. They also show "UNDER 21 ALCOHOL
RESTRICTED" printed in red in large type on the license.
CDL:
Commercial licenses show "COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE" immediately
below the heading.
