MANITOBA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The Province of Manitoba currently issues a twelve character alpha
numeric license number with dash delimiters breaking the number
into a 2-2-2-6 format: (AA-AA-AA-AnnnAA)
Manitoba uses a simplified coding system that breaks down the
driver's personal identifiers as follows:
Last Name:
The first five characters of the last name comprise the first five
characters of the license number. If the last name is shorter than
five characters, the first five characters are padded with
asterisks.
First Initial:
The first initial is the sixth character in the license number.
Middle Initial:
The middle initial is the seventh character in the license number.
Year of Birth:
The year of birth subtracted from 100 makes up the eighth and ninth
positions of the license number.
Month and Day of Birth:
The eleventh and twelfth positions in the license number are codes
for the month and day of birth. (The tenth position is a check
digit.)
DOCUMENT:
The two part license is made up of a plastic laminated, photograph
card and a paper information document. Each requires the other to
be valid. The driver's driver's photograph is displayed in an oval
vignette on the left side of the document. The camera number
should overlap the left edge of the photograph vignette.
TERM:
License is valid for one (1) year, expiring on the last day of the
driver's birth month. The Photo card is valid for four (4) years.
MINORS:
There is no special indication of a minor licensee. Check the date
of birth on the document.
CDL:
Inapplicable.
