PERSONAL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Shareware Version 3.1
GENERAL INFORMATION
This file gives some general information, installation
instructions and helpful user hints for the ShareWare
version of Personal Management Information System (PMIS).
The ShareWare version of PMIS is a complete home database
management system. The author encourages its use, copying
and distribution to friends, colleagues and Bulletin Boards.
Version 3.1 comprises many feature additions suggested by
registered users and is the result of several years in the
program's evolution and improvement. Earlier versions are
still in existence; however, version 3.1 constitutes the
most feature rich and user friendly edition.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
There are 3 versions of PMIS3 being distributed, a PMIS3.ZIP
file, a PMIS3.ARC file and PMIS3.EXE file. To extract the
program you need to use PKUNZIP.EXE for the .ZIP file or
PKXARC.EXE or ARC-E.COM for the .ARC version. The .EXE file
is self extracting. Entering the command PMIS3 will extract
all the files. In any case, all the files that extracted
must be in the SAME directory for the correct execution of
the PMIS program.
Just a note about the .ZIP version. PKUNZIP.EXE must be a
version earlier than 2.04. Version 2.04 will not correctly
extract the program files. Any earlier version will work,
such as 1.10 or 0.92.
Once you meet this requirement and verify that all the files
are present, installation is complete and you are ready to
begin using PMIS.
To execute the PMIS program change to the directory where
the program files reside and enter the following command:
PMIS
That's all there is to it. Follow the screen menus and try
the program's many features. Just a note. To move around
on the menu screens you can use the up and down arrow keys.
Entering a carriage return on the highlighted menu item
- 2 -
selects it. You can also select a menu item by entering the
FIRST letter of any menu item on the current menu screen.

(1-18).inf - 18 user information data files
All of these files, with the exception of the README.1ST
file are required for executing PMIS. If any files are
missing you have an altered version of the program; the
author recommends you discard it to avoid any unpredictable
or unwanted effects.
Getting Started
- 3 -
It is recommended that the first action upon entry to the
main menu screen is to select the set up screen. On the set
up screen select the Disk Drives option. The current drives
for the program, data, and backup are displayed. If these
drive names are different than those in your machine, follow
the set up instructions to change the drive names. Finally,
save the new disk drive configuration to disk using the save
option. This procedure should be done before using any of
the PMIS main menu features.
A User's manual is available and built into the program.
You can either view the User Manual on the screen, or print
it out on any dot matrix, ink jet, or laser printer. The
manual is lengthy, about 35 pages for most printers, so be
prepared for a significant printing job. I recommend that
you read the manual on line first to get to feel comfortable
with the program's features.
The Registered version provides on-line help via the F1
Function key. The appropriate section of the user manual
pops up based on the current active screen. This feature is
unavailable to the ShareWare user. A message informs the
ShareWare user of this fact if the F1 key is selected.
Making Backups
It is highly recommended that back up copies of the files
created in the PMIS3 directory be made as a back up of the
PMIS program to fall back on. You can then experiment with
all the features of the program until you are familiar and
comfortable with PMIS. You can then discard this trial
flight and begin with a new, empty data base by copying the
data files, that is files with the .DBF suffix, from the
back up copies made previously. Just copy all files with
the .DBF suffix into the PMIS3 directory.
If for some reason the back up disk is unavailable, you can
re install PMIS by unarchiving the PMIS3.ZIP or PMIS3.ARC
file with the PKUNZIP.EXE or PKXARC.EXE or ARC-E.COM
utilities. Execute PMIS3 for the self extracting PMIS3.EXE
file. If you do not make back up disks, at least save the
the original PMIS3.ZIP, PMIS3.ARC or PMIS3.EXE file used for
installation so you can re-install the program.
TRY IT & SEE FOR YOURSELF
Spend some time with PMIS, and I think you will see that it
is a program that you will want to keep and use.
