  15. Public Access is a Time/Use/Billing Control Front-End Shell for libraries
  16. or public or private community resource business that rents their computer
  17. resources to casual off-the-street customers (general public).
  18.  
  19. In the past, computer resource rentals had been primarily aimed at word
  20. processing and desktop publishing for letter and resume writing.  These
  21. businesses handled customer charges manually over the counter with counter
  22. personnel.
  23.  
  24. PUBLIC ACCESS elevates the whole environment to a completely new level
  25.  
  26. With PUBLIC ACCESS, for the first time, the local library, Copy Center
  27. or what have you, can offer their customer access to online communications
  28. as well as any application for information access and processing, all under
  29. one controlled environment.  Comes with more than 200 phone numbers and a
  30. demo logon password for PRODIGY (r).

  32. Additionally, the site can offer the customer the opportunity to pay by CASH
  33. or CREDIT CARD. All Credit Card transactions are verified before proceeding.

  35. You are free to use PUBLIC ACCESS as a ASP shareware product for a period of
  36. 60 days.  If you like it and continue to use PUBLIC ACCESS then you must
  37. register it with J.Q.Turner, dba IN/QUEST L.L.C.  See 'REGISTER.DOC'.

  44. NOTE: If this is an upgrade to an earlier version, which you've already been
  45.       using, then you must place this new version in its own NEW directory.
  46.       You will be prompted on how to bring over your old data.
  47.  
  48. A. OPTION 1. Archived File On 5.25" Floppy
  49.  
  50.    To unarchive PUBLIC ACCESS copy the PACCSXXA.EXE and PACCSXXB.EXE files from
  51.    floppy to any desired hard disk directory.  These two files are self
  52.    extracting files.  Now type
  53.  
  54.          PACCS23A <CR> and then when completed, type..
  55.          PACCS23B <CR>
  56.  
  57.    to self extract PUBLIC ACCESS.  The self extracting file will prompt you at
  58.    the beginning, confirming your wish to self extract.

  60. B. OPTION 2. Self Installing 3.5" Floppy
  61.  
  62.    Put the 3.5" distribution disk in drive A: or B: and type 'INSTALL' at the
  63.    system prompt for that floppy.

  71. Requires 1.5 megebytes of hard disk disk space and does NOT alter any of your
  72. system setup (Config.SYS of Autoexec.BAT) files.  The person installing
  73. PUBLIC ACCESS must make alternations to the Autoexec.bat file before running
  74. PUBLIC ACCESS.  See below for instructions.
  75.  
  76. This version of PUBLIC ACCESS requires Datastorm's PCPLUS (r) V2.01 for the
  77. bulk of its text communications.  PCPLUS was the only terminal communications
  78. program on the market offering the required features in its script language.
  79. As other terminal communication programs develop adequate control features
  80. for their script languages I will add drivers for those terminal programs.

  82. To run PUBLIC ACCESS you must first SET one (perhaps two) environment
  83. variable(s).  The variable(s) tell(s) PUBLIC ACCESS where it can find itself.

  87.  │       ACCESS.  It should always show the system where the 'NEWEST'        │

  91. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file with any text editor or word processor
  92. (in non-document/text mode) by placing the following line(s) in
  93. your file.
  94.  
  95.       SET PACP={Drive:\Path\Dir}  Example 'SET PACP=C:\PA'
  96.  
  97. If you install PUBLIC ACCESS on a hard drive other than 'C:' then you must
  98. also enter the following command.
  99.  
  100.      SET PACD={Drive:}            Example 'SET PACD=D:'
  101.  
  102. Note: You can also enter the above commands directly at the system prompt
  103. command line without rebooting your computer.
  104.  
  105. When your environment is set, change to that directory and type:
  106.  
  107.      'PAC' then ENTER to start PUBLIC ACCESS
  108.  
  109. PUBLIC ACCESS will start up and take you through several setup and
  110. configuration steps, first with general system questions then secondly with
  111. specific system questions.  All the fields in the Setup/Configuration screen
  112. must be filled in with valid information.  Otherwise, you can not proceed.
  113.  
  114. When you are finished with this step, just press ESC, F7 or Page UP to arrive
  115. at the systems Main Menu.
