  6. This is an open beta test of BGFAX 1.10 revision A.  In the past weeks, I
  7. have been bombared with phone calls and netmail from owners of Supra LC
  8. modems and the new Hayes 28.8K Optima modems begging me to update BGFAX so
  9. that it works with Class 1 fax modems.
  10.  
  11. Owners of USR Sportsters: Before you read any further, you can stop now.
  12. BGFAX _still_ will not work with the Sportster.  Although this new
  13. experimental copy of BGFAX contains Class 1 support, it requires that the
  14. modem has ADAPTIVE ANSWER capbilties.  The Sportster does not.
  15.  
  16. The only two modems that would seem to benefit from this version of BGFAX,
  17. like I said above, are probably the Supra LC (the "low cost" version of the
  18. Supra that has adaptive answering, but lacks Class 2 fax) and the Hayes
  19. Optima 28.8K users.

  21. Some of you have been asking me about this for months and I've always
  22. replied "It can't be done" or "The timing is too critical".  Well, it
  23. turns out I had NO IDEA what I was talking about.  After spending about an
  24. hour studying the Class 1 situation, and about 6 hours recoding BGFAX, I
  25. believe I have come up with something that will work.
  26.  
  27. Also, I believed at one that that all Class 1 adaptive answer modes worked
  28. like the new USR Class 2.0 modem in Class 1 adaptive answer mode.  (The USR
  29. modem, when it gets a data call in Class 1 adaptive mode, reports "DATA"
  30. and requires the BBS program/mailer to send an "ATO" command back to it so
  31. that it will "return to data mode" and report the CONNECT speed.  Since no
  32. mailer I know of would do this, I assumed all Class 1 adaptive answering
  33. capabilites would be nullified because of this crazy demand.  Fortunetly,
  34. it seems neither the Supra or the Optima require this "ATO" command.)

  36. I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS WITH THE SUPRA LC OR THE HAYES OPTIMA.  I don't own
  37. either of those modems.  So, why do I _think_ it should work?  I have
  38. tested this version of BGFAX with the Supra Fax Modem v.32bis (in Class 1
  39. mode, AT+FAE=1) and the USR DS 21.6K Class 2.0 modem (in Class 1 mode,
  40. AT+FCLASS=1, AT+FAA=1).  The Class 1 mode seems to function with both of
  41. these, both in BGFAX's /HOST mode and when I am running FD 2.11 and have FD
  42. exit with an errorlevel of 255 when it sees a "FAX" result code and run
  43. BGFAX in rear end mode (see instructions below.)

  45. Later in the day: I have attempted to test BGFAX in Class 1 mode with two
  46. different Hayes 288 modems.  Both start handshaking in fax, exchange ID's
  47. and then the answering mode *SWITCHES TO DATA MODE* and attempts a data
  48. handshake in the middle of the fax handshake!  I'm not sure if this is a
  49. bug in BGFAX or a bug in the Hayes modem.  Hopefully, some Supra LC users
  50. can try BGFAX with their modem and let me know if it works with them.

  52. With my Supra fax modem, I set FD with an Init string of "ATZ|" and an
  53. answer string of "AT+FAE=1;A|".  The Optima MAY require you to be in
  54. "+FCLASS=1" mode to do this.  Without being able to use one, I am guessing
  55. it should be the same as Supra's method.

  57. When FrontDoor 2.11 exits, I run BGFAX with the following parameters:

  59. BGFAX /FAX:713_893_9124 C:\BGFAX 1 Z
  60.  
  61. The "713_893_9124" is your facsimile ID.  If you wish to use spaces in the
  62. ID, use UNDERSCORES as I have above.  The directory is where BGFAX will
  63. store incoming faxes.  The "1" is for COM1 and "Z" means to store faxes in
  64. the ZFAX format.

  66. The included BGFAX.CNF file is used ONLY if you are using to be running
  67. BGFAX in /HOST mode (where BGFAX answers the phone and passes control to
  68. your BBS.)  The CNF file is NOT necessary for /FAX mode operation.

  70. It is assumed you have a copy of the BGFAX110.ARJ file that contains the
  71. complete documentation to BGFAX.

  73. BGFAX /SEND MODE DOES NOT YET WORK WITH CLASS 1 MODE.
