Transcription: The surface of a magnetic disk is divided up into tracks and sectors. To record information, the read head moves to a track containing an empty sector. Information is sent from the computer to the drive as a stream of binary numbers, that is zeros and ones. An electromagnet on the head records each number or bit by changing the magnetic field on the disk surface. Each bit is recorded in a fraction of a second as the disk spins. To retrieve data, the disk is spun past the head, which reads the magnetic fields on the disk, sending signals back to the computer.
