OCR: Hadrosaurus ("thick lizard") was the first dinosaur to be discovered in North America. Dug out from a marl pit at Haddonfield, New Jersey, by William Parker Foulke, the partial skeleton was handed over to Joseph Leidy (1823-97), professor of anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. He recognized many similarities to Iguanodon (found in England in 1822), which was at that time thought to look like a reptilian rhinoceros. UPRIGHT POSTURE However, the Hadrosaurus skeleton was much more complete than that of Iguanodon, and Leidy recognized that, with its short forelimbs and long, powerful hind legs, Hadrosaurus could stand upright. Unlike most hadrosaurs (duck-billed dinosaurs), it did not have a head crest, but there was a large bump of solid bone on its snout. Its bill was toothless but hundreds of small teeth at the back of the jaws produced an efficient chewing and grinding action for eating tough vegetation.
