At first he thought the bone belonged to an ancient elephant, but after comparing it with the bones of a modern elephant he decided it must be a giant human bone. The fossil has long since disappeared, but the drawing suggests it was part of the thighbone of Megalosaurus, whose name means "giant lizard."
