A SOLAR PANEL is a surface attached to a spacecraft that is covered in photovoltaic cells - devices that convert light into electrical energy. A solar panel may cover the body of a spacecraft, or may be a large wing-like structure extending out from the sides. Skylab, the first US space station, used solar panels that could each generate up to 10 kilowatts of power.
