A RED SHIFT is a measure of the degree to which light from a receding object moves toward the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. As an object speeds away, the wavelengths of the light it emits are lengthened, moving the visible light toward the red end of the spectrum. The degree to which the red shift occurs is used to gauge the speed at which an object is receding.
