OCR: RED GIANT A RED GIANT is a star of relatively low mass, such as the Sun, at a late stage in its life cycle. A main-sequence star evolves into a red giant when it has exhausted the supply of hydrogen for nuclear reactions in its core. In becoming a red giant, the star expands greatly, causing its surface temperature to drop so that the star changes color from yellow to red.
