OCR: POPULATION I STAR POPULATION I STARS are relatively young stars within the densest part of the Milky Way Galaxy that are rich in elements heavier than helium. These elements were formed by nuclear reactions inside earlier generations of stars. Eventually, all stars return material to the interstellar medium (clouds of gas and dust between the stars) where it is recycled when new stars form.
