OCR: PAYLOAD A PAYLOAD IS the cargo that a rocket or shuttle carries into orbit. This can be a satellite, a spacecraft, or a scientific instrument. The size of payload that a rocket can carry depends on the size of the rocket and its payload bay, and on the amount of thrust produced by the rocket's engines. The US Space Shuttle, for example, can deliver 29,500 kg (65,000 lb) of cargo into orbit.
