PARALLAX REFERS TO the difference in the apparent position of an object viewed against its background from two different positions. As the Earth orbits the Sun, some stars in the sky seem to shift in relation to more distant stars. By measuring the angle of shift at two points 6 months apart, and given the diameter of the Earth's orbit, the distance of a star from the Earth can be calculated.
