A NEUTRON STAR is a small, dense star in the final stages of stellar evolution that consists almost entirely of neutrons - a type of particle that is smaller than an atom. A neutron star has a diameter of about 10 km (6.2 miles) and a mass of up to three times the mass of the Sun. A rotating neutron star that emits beams of radiation may be detected as an object called a pulsar.
