OCR: MAIN- SEQUENCE STAR A MAIN-SEQUENCE STAR is one that is fusing hydrogen to form helium by means of nuclear reactions in its core. Once the hydrogen in the core is exhausted, the star becomes a red giant or supergiant. The main sequence is the longest observable stage of stellar evolution. About 90 percent of recorded stars are on the main sequence.
