THE MILKY WAY GALAXY is a spiral galaxy containing the Sun and about 500 billion other stars. It appears to an observer on the Earth as a band of light in the sky. Most of the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy are located in the nucleus (central part) of the galaxy. The Solar System, containing the Sun and its planets, is located in an area about 30,000 light years from the galactic center.
