OCR: METEOROID A METEOROID IS an interplanetary piece of rock or dust. If a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere, it burns up and leaves a brief trail of light in the sky called a METEOR or shooting star. If any part of a meteoroid survives a journey through the Earth's atmosphere (or through the atmosphere of any planet or moon) and hits the surface, it is known as a METEORITE.
