OCR: METALLIC HYDROGEN WHEN HYDROGEN GAS is subjected to a pressure greater than 500,000 times that of the Earth's atmosphere, it becomes so compressed that it changes from a gas into a liquid with metallic properties. This is known as metallic hydrogen. A shell of liquid metallic hydrogen is thought to surround the central core of the planet Jupiter.
