OCR: HEAT SHIELD A HEAT SHIELD is a coating of heat-resistant material on the outer shell of a spacecraft that protects the craft from the high temperatures produced during reentry by atmospheric friction. The US Space Shuttle is covered in 30,000 tiles made from silica fiber that protect the aluminum structure of the spacecraft from temperatures up to 1,260 ℃ (2,300 ºF).
