OCR: FUEL CELL A FUEL CELL IS a device carried onboard a spacecraft that produces power for the spacecraft's electrical systems. When hydrogen and oxygen from separate pressurized tanks are combined in the fuel cell, electrical energy and drinking water are produced. The three fuel cells onboard the US Space Shuttle can provide enough power and water for the crew for a 10-day mission.
