OCR: EPICYCLE .............................................. AN EPICYCLE IS a circular path whose center traces out another larger circle. Until the 17th century, the theory of epicyclic motion was used to explain the motions of planets. It was then realized that the Earth is not at the center of the Universe. Until this time, it was assumed that planets such as Mars moved in epicycles centered on a larger, circular orbit around the Earth.
