AN EMISSION NEBULA is a cloud of gas or dust in space, such as the Orion Nebula, consisting mainly of hydrogen atoms that give off energy in the form of visible light. The atoms of hydrogen are converted into ions (charged particles) by ultraviolet radiation from hot stars inside the nebula. These ions give off light, causing the gas to shine.
