AN ELLIPTICAL GALAXY consists of millions of stars grouped together within a shape like a flattened sphere. Only very small amounts of interstellar gas and dust are contained in an elliptical galaxy, and most of the stars within it are red giants more than 10 billion years old. The largest elliptical galaxies contain over 1,000 billion stars.
