OCR: ECLIPTIC PLANE A PLANE IS a flat surface. The ecliptic plane is an imaginary plane of unlimited extent, on which the Earth moves in its orbit around the Sun. This plane is inclined at 23.5º to the Earth's equatorial plane (the plane that passes through the Earth's equator). Lunar and solar eclipses can occur only when the Moon passes through the ecliptic plane.
