OCR: CRATER A CRATER IS a bowl- or saucer- shaped feature on the surface of a planet or moon. Impact craters are formed by the collision of an asteroid or meteoroid with a larger object. Calderas are craters formed by the eruption or collapse of a volcano at the surface. The Caloris Basin on the planet Mercury is a meteoroid impact crater 1,300 km (800 miles) in diameter.
