OCR: CONVECTION ZONE THE CONVECTION ZONE of the Sun, or of any star, is the layer that lies immediately beneath the star's visible surface or photosphere. Electromagnetic energy flows outward through this zone by convection, a process by which currents of hot gas rise through the zone, give off heat, light, and other forms of energy, and then fall back down.
