OCR: COMET .............................................. A COMET IS a relatively small object that follows a long, eccentric orbit around the Sun and consists of dust and ice. Most comets orbit far beyond the planets at distances of up to 100,000 astronomical units (about 15,000 billion km or 9,000 billion miles). If a comet's orbit brings it close to the Sun, the comet partially vaporizes, producing a bright head of dust and gas, and one or more tails.
