OCR: BALLOON PROBE BALLOON PROBES ARE dropped by parachute from orbiting craft or landing probes to hover in the clouds of a planet or moon in order to study its atmosphere. These probes stay floating in the clouds, transmitting data to the orbiting mother craft, only falling to land at the end of their mission. Balloon probes may also be released from Earth to study the Earth's atmosphere.
