OCR: ASTEROID .............................................. AN ASTEROID IS a small, rocky object that orbits the Sun and is smaller in size than a planet. Asteroids may be stony, carbonaceous, or metallic in composition and they range in size from about 1,000 km (620 miles) across, down to the smallest dust particles. Asteroids are found mainly in the asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter.
