OCR: ACCRETION DISK AN ACCRETION DISK is a circular ring of material around a spinning celestial object. Accretion disks form in binary star systems when the loose outer layers of a giant star are pulled by gravity toward its companion star. The companion star, which must be very dense and spinning rapidly for a disk to form, may be a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
