OCR: ABSORPTION LINE AN ABSORPTION LINE is a dark line ........................ .... .. .. . . . that appears on a star's spectrum, caused when light emitted from the star is absorbed by cooler gas in the star's upper atmosphere. Gas atoms absorb light of specific wavelengths, and so the patterns of absorption lines can indicate which gases are present in the star's atmosphere.
