The garden where was an apple-tree, which gave golden fruits. It was guarded by some Nymphs. Heracles had to take these apples during his labours and asked Atlas to go himself offering to support the sky on his shoulders in his place. When Atlas returned he no longer wanted to resume the weight. So Heracles asked him to hold the sky for just a moment while he arranged things better, Atlas fell and Heracles went with the apples.
