The Minotaur was fed by human flesh that the Athenians, defeated in war, had to furnish sending to Minos every year seven boys and seven girls. To free his city from this tribute Theseus went with the other children. Reaching Crete Ariadne fell in love with him, the daughter of Minos, who gave him a spool of thread furnished by Daedelus. Theseus attached the beginning of the spool at the entrance and entered the Labyrinth unwinding it; he came to the Minotaur and killed it and then rewinding the string he found the way to exit the Labyrinth. He kidnapped Ariadne and took her away with him.
