  1. LAST MINUTE HINTS and TROUBLESHOOTING INFO - ClipMate 2.09b

  4. TO LEARN HOW TO USE CLIPMATE, CONSULT THE ON-LINE HELP.
  5. START WITH OVERVIEW, TOOLBAR, WHAT'S NEW.
  6. This document deals with specific problems that you may
  7. encounter, particularly with filters.
  8. *********************************************************
  9.  
  10. GOOD FILTERS: 
  11. Here are some filter recommendations, based on the experiences of some
  12. ClipMate users.  You'll have to experiment, to see which formats you 
  13. actually need, as each user's needs will differ.
  14. "ADVANCED" refers to an option that is set by the ADVANCED OPTIONS 
  15. dialog, accessed from the FILTER dialog.  
  16.  
  17.   Word for Windows (WinWord)
  18.     Rich Text Format
  19.     TEXT
  20.     PICTURE (from position 3 only - ADVANCED)
  21.     
  22.     Also, if WinWord complains when you Auto-Glue or PowerPaste,
  23.     implement a DELAY WHEN COPY of 100ms.  This gives WinWord a chance
  24.     to finish the copy, before ClipMate updates the clipboard.  ADVANCED
  25.

  28.     Ami Text Format (Ami Formatted Text)
  29.     PICTURE (from position 3 only - ADVANCED)
  30.     BITMAP  
  31.     Ami Frame Format (for frames)

  33.   EXCEL (version 4.0)
  34.     TEXT
  35.     Rich Text Format (if you want to paste into WinWord)
  36.     PICTURE (From position 6, if you want to copy chart/graphs only,
  37.              otherwise, you'll get pictures of the cells that you copy)
  38.     OLE formats (Native, OwnerLink, ObjectLink) work well too, if you're
  39.       going to paste into OLE aware apps.  If you're not, don't bother.
  40.  
  41.     * Unfortunately, of the 17 formats that Excel provides, none are 
  42.       satisfactory, for preserving formatting or formulas.  Capturing
  43.       BITMAPs and PICTUREs are hazardous, as you will get graphic images,
  44.       representing the cells that you've copied.  The exception seems to be
  45.       PICTURE from position 6, which is present when copying graphs.  
  46.  
  47.   DRAW (Micrografix Draw for Windows)
  48.     BITMAP
  49.     PICTURE
  50.     * Stay away from the private formats, beginning with MGX_.  They are
  51.       volatile!
  52.     * When DRAW opens a file, it plays funny games with the Clipboard.  ClipMAte
  53.       will complain that the clipboard contents are invalid.  Just press OK,
  54.       and continue.  There is nothing that can be done about this, other than
  55.       creating a blank filter for DRAW, thereby causing ClipMate to ignore DRAW
  56.       altogether.
  57.    
  58.   PBRUSH (Windows Paintbrush)
  59.     BITMAP
  60.     * PICTURE is not usually necessary, but works well.  If you want PICTURE,
  61.       make sure that PBRUSH is providing it, by unchecking the 
  62.       OMIT PICTURE FORMAT, found under PBRUSH's OPTIONS menu.  If you aren't using
  63.       PICTURE, you can speed up PBRUSH by turning this option off.
  64.  
  65.   ACCESS (Microsoft Access)
  66.     Just about anything that you want, such as DATA RECORDS,
  67.       QUERY, FORM, TEXT, Etc.   These all work well, and you can
  68.       easily gather forms, queries, table rows, etc., from one
  69.       database, and plop them down into another.  The titles
  70.       will be lost, but you will be prompted for a title when
  71.       pasting.  Presumably, this is a feature of Access, to keep
  72.       you from duplicate names within a database....
  73.       Complete queries, forms, macros, etc., are copied simply
  74.       by selecting them in the Database Window, and copying.
  75.       This picks up the whole thing. 
  76.       The annoyance is that Access has
  77.       specific formats for all of these things, which must be
  78.       added to the filter, as you encounter them.  The Wizard
  79.       will only help you add the first one, after that, it will
  80.       go away.  You need to use the normal FILTER dialog to add
  81.       the rest.  
  82.   
  83.   PageMaker 5
  84.     Do not use the PM5 format, as it is not valid, once PageMaker
  85.       loses track of it.  We suspect that it points back into
  86.       PageMaker's local storage, which makes it useless as a clipboard
  87.       format.
  88.     PageMaker seems to provide Palette with just about everything.
  89.       This is an incorrect use of the clipboard, as palette should
  90.       only accompany Bitmap.

  93. TROUBLE SHOOTING:
  94. 1)  When using PowerPaste or Auto Glue, applications complain that they don't
  95.     have enough memory to complete operation, or can't open the clipboard.
  96.    
  97.     Create a filter for the application, and use the ADVANCED OPTIONS to 
  98.     force a short delay (100 ms) when copying data from that application.
  99.     This will give the problematic application time to complete its operation.
  100.  
  101. 2)  You find that you can't glue formats other than TEXT.
  102.  
  103.     That's right, GLUE only works with text.  For other formats, use PowerPaste.
  104.  
  105. 3)  The data stored in ClipMate doesn't seem to paste the same as when you do 
  106.     a "regular" paste.  Formats change, margins change, etc.
  107.  
  108.     Sometimes, applications don't really use the clipboard when copy/pasting data.
  109.     To see whether this is so, perform the "Format Viability Test", found in the
  110.     on-line help.
  111.  
  112. 4)  ClipMate captures "icons" of applications, rather than the data.
  113.  
  114.     Many OLE-capabile applications will provide pictures or bitmaps of their
  115.     icon, in order to conform to OLE.  This is what you're seeing.  If your app
  116.     also provides graphic images, when you copy actual graphics, you may be able
  117.     to adjust the filter to accept only the "true" graphics.  Assuming that you
  118.     are using a word processor, copy some text, and open the FILTER dialog (under
  119.     the CONFIG menu).  Note the ranking of the PICTURE format in the list of 
  120.     Available Formats.  Then, copy an actual PICTURE, and note the ranking again.
  121.     Has it changed position?  If so, you can use the ADVANCED OPTIONS to tell 
  122.     the filter that you only want PICTURE from a particular position.

  124. 5)  Some applications provide "doubles", repeat items on the clipboard.
  125.  
  126.     This can happen with some apps that open/copy/close for each format, a 
  127.     practice that is not standard.  To work around, you can implement a small
  128.     delay when copying - see solution to #1.
  129.  
  130.     Also, many apps refresh the clipboard when they shut down.  This is because
  131.     they may have used "Delayed Rendering" to "advertise" formats on the clipboard
  132.     that they haven't yet produced, or they may be deleting "transient" formats.
  133.     This can't be helped, as ClipMate has no idea of WHY an application copies
  134.     data.

  136. 6)  Hidden text in WinWord
  137.     Use the Rich Text Format to copy hidden text.  
  138.     We recently heard from a physics professor who was using this feature to 
  139.     store test questions in ClipMate.  He could create tests from stored 
  140.     Clip Items, which had "hidden" answers!  Once created, he could just 
  141.     turn on the hidden fields, to see the answer key.

  143. 7)  ClipMate isn't copying graphics!
  144.  
  145.     Make sure that your FILTER for your particular application is allowing 
  146.     graphics.  
  147.  
  148. 8)  The Filter Wizard didn't give a complete list of formats.
  149.  
  150.     The Filter Wizard can only show you the formats that are available,
  151.     not necessarily all of the formats that an application is capable of 
  152.     providing.  Let's say that the first copy from APPXYZ is a pie chart.
  153.     You may have several graphic-oriented formats.  You then create a filter,
  154.     and select PICTURE.  Later, you copy some text, which gets ignored.  
  155.     The Wizard sees that you already have a filter, and doesn't intervene.
  156.     In this case, you need to use the regular FILTER dialog (found under the 
  157.     CONFIG menu) to add TEXT to the filter, yourself.
