  6. INTERIM RELEASE NOTICE
  7. ----------------------
  8. Version 1.04 is a maintenance release which implements a
  9. number of corrections to the program's support file handling
  10. routines.  These corrections improve program reliability, but
  11. do not alter the program's interface or command set.
  12.  
  13. The dialog boxes (including the configuration, voice selection,
  14. and alarm set dialogs) have been redesigned, but their
  15. functionality is unchanged.
  16.  
  17. This version also implements a "Program Window Always Visible"
  18. option in the Program Configuration dialog box.
  19.  
  20. The changes implemented in this version only apply to the
  21. following files:  YAKCLOCK.EXE, YAKCLOCK.HLP, YAKCLOCK.TXT,
  22. and YAKCLOCK.INI.  The voice/sound library files (*.DLL)
  23. remain the same.
  24.  
  25. NOTE:  Version 1.04 handles select configuration settings
  26. differently than prior releases.  As a result, when
  27. installing version 1.04, you should delete or overwrite
  28. the old YAKCLOCK.INI file.  Do NOT attempt to run version
  29. 1.04 using the YAKCLOCK.INI file from a previous release.
  30.  
  31. When in doubt, you can always delete your existing
  32. YAKCLOCK.INI and then run Yakkity Clock 1.04.  The program
  33. will create a new YAKCLOCK.INI file in the correct format.

  37. INTRODUCTION
  38. ------------
  39. Yakkity Clock is a powerful, easy-to-use "talking clock"
  40. utility for the Microsoft Windows operating environment
  41. (versions 3.1 or above).
  42.  
  43. Yakkity Clock takes advantage of the sound capabilities
  44. introduced in Windows 3.1.  The program provides digitized
  45. voice time updates at the touch of a button, or at regular
  46. intervals set by the user.  You may select either a male or
  47. female voice for Yakkity Clock's updates.
  48.  
  49. A library of "built-in" sound effects are included, any of
  50. which may be substituted for the voice time reminder.
  51.  
  52. Yakkity Clock is an alarm clock, too!  Up to four different
  53. alarms can be set to play bell tone or buzzer sound effects
  54. -- and can even be configured to play stand-alone .WAV
  55. sound files!
  56.  
  57. Yakkity Clock's flexibility makes it the ultimate "custom"
  58. clock utility for the Microsoft Windows environment.

  85.     and general operating instructions.

  104. YAKKITY CLOCK PROGRAM NOTES
  105. ---------------------------
  106. Yakkity Clock runs within the Microsoft Windows environment
  107. (versions 3.1 or higher), and requires the following:
  108.  
  109.     * VGA graphics capability.
  110.  
  111.     * A Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing device.
  112.  
  113.     * A Windows-compatible sound card (AdLib, Roland,
  114.     Sound Blaster, etc.) installed...
  115.  
  116.     or...
  117.  
  118.     * The Microsoft Windows 3.1 PC Speaker driver.
  119.  
  120. Yakkity Clock runs in 16-color mode, but will run acceptably
  121. on monochrome or black & white VGA systems.  The program will
  122. run in any Windows 3.1+ operating mode.

  126. SOUND DRIVER NOTES
  127. ------------------
  128. Yakkity Clock makes use of the sound functions implemented
  129. in Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or later.  So, obviously, you
  130. must have the correct version of Windows installed and
  131. correctly configured for your system.
  132.  
  133. As stated earlier, you must also have one of the following:
  134.  
  135. 1) A Windows-compatible sound card (AdLib, Roland,
  136. SoundBlaster, etc.) correctly configured via Microsoft
  137. Windows' "Control Panel" utility.
  138.  
  139. 2) Microsoft's proprietary PC speaker driver.   The speaker
  140. driver is a small program that allows music and sound
  141. effects to be played through a standard PC case speaker.
  142. This driver is available from Microsoft, as well as from a
  143. number of on-line information services.  It, too, must be
  144. correctly installed and configured via Windows' "Control
  145. Panel."

  149. YAKKITY CLOCK SETUP
  150. ------------------
  151. Yakkity Clock requires very little in the way of configuration
  152. or setup.  Although it can be run from a floppy disk, we
  153. strongly recommend installation to a hard disk.

  157. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
  158. -----------------------
  159. 1. MAKE A BACKUP COPY
  160. We strongly recommend making a backup copy of your program
  161. disk.  Keep the master copy in a safe place and use the backup
  162. disk for program installation.
  163.  
  164. 2. COPY THE PROGRAM FILES
  165. Although Yakkity Clock can be run from a floppy disk, we
  166. strongly recommend its installation to a hard disk.
  167.  
  168. To do this, copy the program files (YAKCLOCK.EXE, all *.DLL
  169. files, YAKCLOCK.INI, and YAKCLOCK.HLP) from your master disk
  170. to an appropriate subdirectory on your hard disk (e.g.,
  171. C:\YAKCLOCK).
  172.  
  173. The ASCII text files, YAKCLOCK.TXT and README.TXT, are an
  174. important source of program information, but are not REQUIRED
  175. in order to run Yakkity Clock.  All other files ARE required,
  176. and must reside together in the same drive and directory in
  177. order for the program to work properly.
  178.  
  179. Yakkity Clock can make use of independent .WAV files in its
  180. alarm feature.  Toward that end, any .WAV files you might want
  181. to use with Yakkity Clock must be copied into the Yakkity
  182. Clock directory.
  183.  
  184. 3. ASSIGN AN ICON
  185. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to assign Yakkity
  186. Clock's program item (icon) to a program group.  Setup will
  187. recognize the YAKCLOCK.EXE file and assign its icon to a
  188. program group for you.
  189.

  192. You may assign a program item icon to Yakkity Clock manually,
  193. through the Program Manager menu bar "File/New" command.
  194.  
  195. Always make sure that the complete path and correct filename
  196. (e.g., "C:\YAKCLOCK\YAKCLOCK.EXE") is assigned to the
  197. YAKCLOCK program item.  The "Browse" control in the Program
  198. Item dialog box will make it easy to locate and assign the
  199. correct path and filename.  You do not need to specify a
  200. "Working Directory" for Yakkity Clock.
  201.  
  202. 4. RUN THE PROGRAM
  203. If installed correctly, the program should load from the
  204. Program Manager screen when the Yakkity Clock icon is
  205. double-clicked (or from File Manager when the Yakkity Clock
  206. listing is selected with "File/Run" or double-clicked).
  207.  
  208. Naturally, you do not HAVE to assign Yakkity Clock executable
  209. file to a Program Manager group.  The program can easily be
  210. run directly from File Manager or any "substitute" Windows
  211. shell or desktop application.
  212.

  214.  
  215. GETTING STARTED
  216. ---------------
  217. Yakkity Clock's performance is entirely dependent on the
  218. accuracy of your computer's system time setting (also called
  219. "DOS Time").  You can check and/or adjust this setting from
  220. the DOS prompt by using the "TIME" command, or from within
  221. Microsoft Windows via the Control Panel "Date/Time" applet.
  222.  
  223. Assuming your system time is correctly set, Yakkity Clock
  224. should display the correct current time as soon as it
  225. appears on your screen.
  226.  
  227. Yakkity Clock will also display the current time when reduced
  228. (minimized) to its iconic state.
  229.  
  230. SCREEN SAVER NOTE:  When running the Program Configuration
  231. option to display the current time in the iconic caption,
  232. Yakkity Clock's refresh of the iconic text will defeat most
  233. Windows screen savers.  If you need to run a screen saver,
  234. be sure to set the Program Configuration "Iconic Caption
  235. Text" selection to "Program Title (Default)."  This prevents
  236. the automatic refresh of the iconic caption that is necessary
  237. only when updating the current time.
  238.  
  239. A pushbutton control is located below the digital time
  240. display.  This button can be "clicked" with the mouse pointer
  241. to provide a voice time update.
  242.  
  243. Yakkity Clock can be configured to automatically provide
  244. periodic voice time or sound effects updates.  In addition,
  245. up to four independent alarms can be set, and will sound even
  246. if Yakkity Clock is not the active window or if the program is
  247. minimized.
  248.  
  249. All configuration controls are accessible through the program
  250. system menu.
  251.  
  252. All configuration settings are automatically saved by
  253. Yakkity Clock (and written to the YAKCLOCK.INI
  254. configuration file).  Until they are changed, these settings
  255. will be placed into effect every time the program is run.
  256.  
  257. To take advantage of all Yakkity Clock features requires a
  258. familiarity with the Yakkity Clock system menu commands,
  259. which are listed and summarized in the following section...
  260.

  262.  
  263. SYSTEM MENU COMMAND SUMMARY
  264. ---------------------------
  265. RESTORE
  266.     This command restores a minimized program to its
  267.     full size.
  268.  
  269. MOVE
  270.     This command allows the program window or icon to be
  271.     manually moved from one position to another.  It is
  272.     primarily used with program windows that have no
  273.     caption or title bar (which can be "clicked" and
  274.     "dragged" with a mouse pointer as a way of moving a
  275.     program window).
  276.  
  277. MINIMIZE
  278.     This command minimizes (reduces) a program window to
  279.     its iconic state.  Yakkity Clock will display the
  280.     current system time while minimized to an icon.  In
  281.     addition, all alarm and interval features remain
  282.     fully functional while the program is iconized.
  283.  
  284. CLOSE
  285.     This command closes Yakkity Clock.
  286.  
  287. SWITCH TO...
  288.     This command opens the Windows Task List utility,
  289.     which can be used for quickly switching to, or closing,
  290.     any other active applications.
  291.  
  292. PROGRAM CONFIGURATION...
  293.     This command opens the Yakkity Clock main configuration
  294.     settings dialog box.  From this dialog, the user can
  295.     adjust the "Iconic Caption Text" feature and control the
  296.     Interval Alert functions, which can be set to issue
  297.     periodic voice time or sound effect reminders.
  298.  
  299.     Several "built-in" sound effects may be subtituted for
  300.     the voice time reminder.
  301.  
  302.     A checkbox control is also available for enabling a
  303.     "Program Window Always Visible" option, which configures
  304.     Yakkity Clock to remain in front of any other active
  305.     program windows, even when it doesn't own the input
  306.     focus.
  307.  
  308.     The Interval feature can be disabled by selecting the
  309.     radiobutton control labeled "None/Mute".
  310.  
  311.     SCREEN SAVER NOTE:  When the "Iconic Caption Text"
  312.     option "Current Time" is selected, Yakkity Clock's
  313.     refresh of the iconic text will defeat most Windows
  314.     screen savers, effectively preventing the screen from
  315.     being blanked.
  316.  
  317.     If you need to run a screen saver, you MUST set the
  318.     Program Configuration "Iconic Caption Text" selection
  319.     to "Program Title (Default)."  This disables the
  320.     automatic updating of the iconic caption necessary
  321.     only when displaying the current time in the iconic
  322.     caption.
  323.  
  324. VOICE SELECTION...
  325.     This command opens the Yakkity Clock voice selection
  326.     dialog box.  From this dialog, the user can select
  327.     either the "male" or "female" digitized voice libraries
  328.     to use for Yakkity Clock's voice time updates.
  329.  
  330. ALARM 1
  331.     This command opens the Alarm 1 settings dialog box,
  332.     from which the first of four available alarms can be
  333.     enabled and/or custom-configured.
  334.  
  335.     A series of radio button controls allow choices of
  336.     the type of sound effect to be played -- the alarm
  337.     can also be configured to play a stand-alone .WAV
  338.     sound file instead of one of the default bell or
  339.     buzzer tones.
  340.  
  341.     Scrolling controls are provided in the "Alarm
  342.     Scheduling" area for setting the alarm time.
  343.  
  344. ALARM 2
  345.     This command opens the Alarm 2 settings dialog box,
  346.     from which the second of four available alarms can be
  347.     enabled and/or custom-configured.
  348.  
  349. ALARM 3
  350.     This command opens the Alarm 3 settings dialog box,
  351.     from which the third of four available alarms can be
  352.     enabled and/or custom-configured.
  353.  
  354. ALARM 4
  355.     This command opens the Alarm 4 settings dialog box,
  356.     from which the fourth of four available alarms can be
  357.     enabled and/or custom-configured.
  358.  
  359. HELP...
  360.     This command accesses Yakkity Clock's comprehensive
  361.     run-time help.  This command runs the Windows Help
  362.     system and loads the file, YAKCLOCK.HLP, which contains
  363.     full documentation and program notes on Yakkity Clock.
  364.  
  365.     You may select specific topics to read, or browse
  366.     from topic to topic.  You may even print topics for
  367.     later reference.
  368.  
  369. REGISTRATION INFORMATION...
  370.     This command opens a dialog box containing Yakkity
  371.     Clock registration information.

  374.     This command opens a dialog box containing Yakkity
