Thank you for your interest in Jeepers. Before doing
anything else, please read the following document.
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ How to get started with Jeepers 1.0 for Windows ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
I. What is Jeepers?
Jeepers is a bibliographic database management system.
Jeepers can be used by anyone needing easy access to
references to books, journals, abstracts, magazines, and
other literature.
II. What's on these disks.
You should find a total of 15 files. Here is a short
description of each one:
ReadMe.Doc : The file you are reading now; it contains the
most basic information for starting Jeepers, as
well as a complete list of the files.
Vendor.Doc : A file that must be read by anyone who wishes
to distribute Jeepers, such as vendors.
Sysop.Doc : Same as Vendor.Doc, except for BBS Sysops.
File_Id.Diz : Special file for BBS Sysops.
JeepersW.Exe: This is the Jeepers program itself; it runs
under Windows 3.x.
JeepersW.Hlp: Contains the text for Jeepers' context-
sensitive help screens.
Ref1.JPR : A sample database file for Jeepers. It contains
the actual text of the database.
Ref1.JPK : The "key" file that goes along with the
Ref1.JPR database file. YOU CANNOT USE A
DATABASE FILE WITHOUT A KEY FILE!
JEPRS.Cfg : A sample Config file that contains the
formatting instructions for 30 format styles,
directory and file name information, and
user-specified Global and local Defaults.
JEPRS.Txt : Sample text file. Since you cannot directly
access the database using the DOS Type
command, Jeepers allows you to enter selected
references into an ASCII/DOS text file. You
can use DOS's Type and Print commands on these
text files.
JEPRS.Num : This is a sample "number" file. It is really
a normal ASCII/DOS text file, but consists of
nothing but numbers of references. Jeepers can
use this file to produce a bibliography.
ProComm.Log : A sample MedLine-formatted file. This can be
used in the File, Import... Menu to add a
MedLine-formatted file to the database. (This
is probably only of interest to biomedical
researchers & clinicians who use MedLine-
formatted files.)
Order.Doc : This is an order form for registering your use
of Jeepers. You should print this file on your
printer and then fill out the information
requested. Or you can choose Help, Ordering
Information... while you're running Jeepers to
print an order form. Remember, Jeepers is shareware,
it is not free software! Thanks for your support.
Site_Lic.Doc: This file contains information on bulk pricing
and site licenses for Jeepers. If you plan on
ordering more than one copy of Jeepers, look at
this file to save money.
BWCC.DLL: Borland's Windows Custom Control Library. This file
is necessary to run Jeepers for Windows. You can
keep it in your Jeepers directory or in your
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If there is already a
file there with the same name, use the file with
the most recent date.
III. Starting Jeepers.
To add Jeepers to the Windows Program Manager, do the following:
1. From the Program Manager menu, choose File, New....
2. Select Program Item, and click the OK button.
3. Enter a description, such as "Jeepers 1.1 for Windows".
4. Click the Browse... button, and find the JEEPERSW.EXE
file on your hard disk. Then click OK.
5. Click OK to finish the dialog box.
You should now see the Jeepers icon (it's a black "J!" on a
red circle). Now just double-click the icon to start Jeepers.
If you get an error message that Windows can't find the file
"DDEML.DLL", then you are running Windows 3.0 and you need this
file. We can send it to you (send $5 for shipping) or you can
get it from any Windows 3.1 user; just add it to your
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
IV. What do I do Next?
For a quick demonstration of Jeepers' exciting DDE capabilities,
first start your Windows word processor. Then start Jeepers, and on
the menu choose Options, WordProcessor, and choose WordPerfect,
AmiPro, or Word. If a Jeepers database hasn't been automatically
opened for you, choose File, Open... to open one. Click on one of
the displayed references, then click the Mark button. Now choose
Reference, CreateBibliography... and click on OK.
Then watch in amazement as the reference you selected is sent
to your word processor--magically--by DDE. Notice that it includes
italics, underlining, and boldface, again all automatically.
For help in Jeepers, just press the F1 key or choose Help,
Contents... for help. For a basic introduction, trying choosing
Help, How Do I...? for a quick tutorial. Also, most dialog boxes
have a Help button. Clicking on that button will give you context-
sensitive help.
V. Technical Assistance.

VI. Compatibility.
Jeepers for Windows requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 or above,
or IBM OS/2 2.1 or above. For its DDE features to work, you must
have any of the following Windows word processors: Microsoft Word,
Lotus Ami Pro, Lotus Write, or WordPerfect for Windows. NOTE: Your
copy of WordPerfect for Windows (WPWin.Exe) must be dated April 1992
or later. If you are using version 5.1 dated November 1991, you must
contact WordPerfect Corporation for an update.
